A walkie-talkie is a hand-held portable, two-way radio transceiver. Many companies are manufacturing simple basic walkie talkies as well as the latest high tech handheld radios that are the advanced form. A typical walkie-talkie resembles a telephone handset, but is possibly a bit larger single unit, with an antenna. Hand-held transceivers may be used by two people to communicate with each other. They may be used as vehicle-mounted ones or at base stations. Walkie-talkies have built-in speakers that can be heard by the user and those in his or her immediate vicinity. The first walkie-talkies were developed for military use. Walkie talkies are very useful for people with field work in large open areas.
